Editor’s note: Outspoken Islamic cleric, Dr Ahmad Gumi has called
on Nigerians to change their ways and move to be more clear and forbide
hypocrisy.
In This piece he released on his facebook page, he explains that
it seems like the more he thinks he knows Nigerians, the less he
understands the people.

STORY HIGHLITES:
– Nigerians don’t want to hear criticism. They only want to hear what tally with their whims.
– Nigeria is complex. It defies all logic and textbook analysis.
You Don’t Know Nigerians!
An Arab poet got audience with a Caliph in his palace. He stood up and recited some beautiful hymn of poetry in praise of the Caliph. The Caliph was so happy that he ordered the scribe in charge of treasury to give the poet a thousand Dinar. On hearing that the poet was very happy. He realized that he has hit the jackpot, he therefore immediately continued in his eulogy. The caliph was so exhilarated, that in his ecstasy ordered for another thousand Dinar. At this junction, the Treasurer stood up to the Caliph and said: My Master, this way, the treasure will then be empty. The Caliph replied: Don’t worry! The poet has made us happy with his TALK, and we have also made him happy with our TALK. The treasurer then understood that he doesn’t have to pay the poet anything. LOL
This depicts our very nature in Nigeria. The story of mutual deception.
Nigerians don’t want to hear criticism. They only want to hear what tally with their whims.
Hypocrisy in its raw form. For that, there is no scandal in Nigeria, no crimes and criminals. For every criminal is saint, it depends on who you are talking to. This has made everything possible with Nigerians of all classes and dimensions. Of course, every general rule has an exception.
In this divided nation, you cant afford to be neutral or see things different. You must be maligned. The ill mannerism and crudeness knows no boundary.
I relocated back to Nigeria after spending more than twenty years away. When I came back home, few good people have been warning me about ‘us’ Nigerians. They tell me: “You don’t know Nigerians …” I refused to concur; I usually say it’s not correct. I do mix with Nigerians of all classes where I was, moreover I also subscribe to some Internet networks that discuss our problems and also have access to Nigerian on-line news. So what is all the fuss about?
But today after about three years from my stay in Nigeria, after dealing with Nigerians of all classes especially the laborers, the carpenters, the electricians, masons, poultry attendants, aids, house-helps, doctors, engineers, students, etc. I do confess that I have just graduated from primary school of knowing Nigerians looking up to JSS1 with fright.
Nigeria is complex. It defies all logic and textbook analysis.
I have realized that I was naively excessive in my criticism of others, since those that where ‘clapping’ for me when I was bashing the wrong persona, I found out now are not ready to accept even the slightest criticism on themselves, knowing fully well that some of them have also committed grave offenses against the nation and humanity. It means people are not honest. Most probably those people I criticized are the ‘one-eyed in the kingdom of the Blind’. It’s sad to realize.
For this reason, I believe the nation needs to chart as different course if it is to survive. What advice, I will give the nation is to tread gently. Nigeria is too fragile. In anticipation of a better future, if utmost care is not taken, we will have a transformation or change that is most disastrous.
In Nigeria, everything boils down to wealth.
No matter what Religious or ethnic or regional or liberal or Marxist or Capitalist coloration that Nigerians display, its all about Money.
Well, there may be nothing wrong with that since the strategic interest which defines the policy of every nation or country or region is the economic interest first and foremost. The only left out nation is the Nigeria for lack of acumen in the pragmatic means of such pursuit. The Nation, more especially the North has often squandered its golden opportunities to help itself on many occasions. This 2015 election, we fear, may be another opportunity already lost from the trend of things and the antagonism from the warring interest groups that are mutually deceiving each other and the nation at large.
So since we don’t want to hear the bitter truth, as the Arab poet was requited also with talk only that was made to make him happy momentarily, Nigerians should continue to talk sweet until the day they will realize that they were only fooling themselves.
Nigerians have no Savior beside God, except to eschew bitterness, melancholy and hatred.
May Allah deliver us all. Amin
