The gunmen, it was gathered, stormed Tafawa Balewa town at about 7am in 18 Hilux vehicles and started shooting sporadically.
The police public relations officer in the state, DSP Haruna Mohammed who confirmed the attack said security personnel engaged the gunmen in gun battle.
Haruna said youths in the area succeeded in killing four insurgents while the gunmen killed three vigilante members.
“On 30/3/2015 at about 07:30hrs, unknown gunmen stormed Tafawa Balewa town in a convoy of eighteen Hilux vehicles and started firing sporadically in different directions”, he stated.
According to Mohammed, a joint team of police and local vigilante group in the town got wind of the approaching hoodlums and engaged them in a fierce gun battle which forced them to abandon four Hilux vehicles mounted with anti-aircraft machine guns and retreated towards Bununu after suffering heavy casualties.
