1. Honolulu, Hawaii
Going to Hawaii is getting away without going to far. It’s still part of
the US, but physical it’s not and that gives Hawaii an exotic feel.
Couples dreaming about a Hawaiian honeymoon should consider Honolulu and
the island of Oahu. They’re home to attractions like Waikiki Beach,
Diamond Head Crater and the Banzai Pipeline Surf Break. Honolulu’s
hefty hotel stock means rates are available that fit every budget.
Eating is a highlight, especially when you join the locals at the
low-priced lunch joints and bakeries of Honolulu’s Kapahulu neighborhood
and the city’s Saturday farmers’ market. There are many free festivals
and special events that highlight the island’s multicultural heritage
and tropical beauty.
2. Brazil
Brazil was once a country that did not believe in the all-inclusive
package until now. Now a trip to Brazil is easier and cheaper to book.
Many new properties have opened in prime honeymoon locations. The
musical city of Bahia on the north coast and the super-chic Buzios
beach-resort area near Rio de Janeiro are some honeymoon destinations
that will take your breath away. Rio can actually be very reasonable.
The most popular activities are absolutely free, people-watching and
parading up and down Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. To save money don’t
stay in hotels that are on the beach. Hotels a block or two away from
the beach are often hundreds of dollars per night cheaper than the
sand-side ones while offering the same level of room and service.
3. Ireland
Dublin, Ireland has gone from being one of the most expensive capitals
in Western Europe to one of the best values, with the average price of a
hotel night falling over the past two years. Even though Dublin’s price
tag is cheaper than previous years there are still more frugal
alternatives on the Emerald Isle. Skip Dublin and fly straight into
Shannon Airport to save money and time. This way you can enjoy the
attractions for which Ireland is known for welcoming locals, thriving
musical culture and rugged natural beauty.
4. Jamaica
Jamaica has huge all-inclusive resorts that lure newlyweds who are
craving bargains. The newer Riu, Iberostar and Gran Bahia Principe
resorts are visually appealing and if you can find a nice deal I
encourage you to take it. If you are looking for something a little
nicer to your pockets, try the long standing, Sandals resort. This
resort was founded in Jamaica, and they are constantly offering all
sorts of incentives. Spa credits, free nights and rates up to 65 percent
less than the newer resorts. Getting there is no hassle as well.
Airlines like JetBlue and Air Transat now fly between North American
cities and Montego Bay making Jamaica one of the cheapest places to
reach in the Caribbean.
5. Balkans
The Balkans is Europe’s long-lost corner. It may not seem like the most
obvious spot for a honeymoon, but the Balkans have really come into
their own in recent years as a low-cost alternative to pricier
Mediterranean destinations. Bulgaria and Croatia have emerged as
standout locales where money gets you more than anywhere else on the
continent. Bulgaria blends Roman ruins, ancient Orthodox churches,
Greek-like cuisine and Black Sea beaches with incredibly low prices on
just about everything. Croatia is for more active couples with its
inland national parks with white-water rafting, hiking and boating on
jade-colored lakes.
6. Australia
The Australian Automobile Association offers an awesome Web tool for
figuring out the prices of hotels, B&Bs, hostels and even houseboats
and campgrounds. AAA’s star system is primarily based on amenities but
roughly corresponds to overnight rates. This tool makes it a breeze to
plan a honeymoon trip to Australia. With trans-Pacific tickets a little
less from their pre-recession peak, you can easily reach Australia for a
lower price. Qantas and other Australian carriers also offer value air
passes that allow flexible flights within Australia. This is ideal for
first-time visitors who want to see it all. Australia has many
sophisticated restaurants and shops in Sydney and Melbourne, wonderful
dive sites along the Great Barrier Reef and a vast desert landscapes in
the Red Center.
7. Yacatan Peninsula
The Yacatan Peninsula has a variety of places you and your loved one can
stay. Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula includes Cancun and Cozumel islands,
the mainland Riviera Maya and inland spots like Chichen Itza and Merida.
Each destination mentioned has its own vibe and scenery, allowing for
plenty of choice in terms of where you stay, eat and play. Cancun is all
about beaching, bargain shopping and crazy nightlife for the young
couple that like to party together. For the more adventurous couple
Cozulmel has a long barrier reef perfect for diving. The average price
of a hotel room has significantly dropped plunged across the Yucatan
during spring and summer. Five-star hotels generally offer the deepest
discounts. For a more intimate experience you can get a jungle bungalow
at the Mayaland Hotel, near Chichen Itza.
8. Montreal, Canada
Canada, our neighbors to the north boast beautiful and active cities
like Toronto and Vancouver, but Montreal is a better honeymoon
destination. If you and you new spouse are looking for a French feeling
during your honeymoon but Paris is a little too expensive, Montreal is a
good substitute. Montreal is a French speaking city that is compact and
has top-grade public transit. Renting a car is unnecessary so that’s
more money to spend on other things like the fine cuisine, the Marche
Bonsecours market and the boutiques. Other free attractions are the
Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Redpath Museum, and the the city’s
famous comedy festival.
9. Thailand
Southeast Asia’s most popular country, Thailand is a destination where
it almost doesn’t matter how much money you spend. Tropical paradises
like Phuket and Ko Samui will trap you with it scenery. Thailand’s
biggest bargain is accommodations. Fierce competition between hotels has
brought room prices down to levels that seem too good to be true.
Flying around Thailand is fairly inexpensive too and never takes very
long. Flights between Bangkok and the northern city of Chiang Mai take
about an hour and can cost less one-way than most flights in the U.S.
10. Portugal
Portugal is one of the most affordable holiday destinations in Europe.
Even beating out neighboring Spain and Greece. Portugal has modernized
itself but still hold on to its old charm with ancient castles and
fishing villages. It also had modern urban neighborhoods with beach
retreats and world class golf courses. Portugal’s rise as a desirable
destination also raised the hotel rates just a little, but it all
balances out with low rental car prices, and reasonable restaurant
prices.
11. Turkey
Turkey’s shoreline stretches over 3,400 miles and touches three
different seas, the Mediterranean, the Black and the Aegean. Much like
neighboring Greece, the coast is sprinkled with ancient ruins and
picturesque villages. Chic waterfront resorts on white-sand beaches add a
modern feel and look to the country. Plan right, and you could end up
paying half as much for a Turkish honeymoon as an equivalent Greek
getaway. Turkey’s seaside resorts are an especially good bargain. On the
Turkish shore, you can snag a great room in places like Antalya, Bodrum
or the new hipster hangout of Cesme, for much less than a room in
Santorini. Istanbul is the most popular city in Turkey and has become
very sophisticated.
12. Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico has always been a very popular getaway. This island remains
one of the Caribbean’s best value getaways. One of the perks of Puerto
Rico is that U.S. citizens don’t have to invest in a passport to get
there. Flights from the States haven’t dropped that much in price over
the past few years, but accommodations in Puerto Rico definitely have.
Surf schools at world-renowned Playa Rincon range are considerably less
than other surf spots like Hawaii. Scuba diving is a popular activity
here. You can get around the island in a low cost rental car saving even
more money. Puerto Rico is a perfect honeymoon destination for
newlyweds who like to swim, soak up the sun, enjoy art, or dance.
13. Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is the teardrop-shaped island in the Indian Ocean and is on
the opposite side of the globe from North America, so airfare isn’t
cheap. That’s the only thing to worry about financially because once you
reach the island you’ll find that it is very affordable. All of the
exotic delights India has to offer are in Sri Lanka. Palaces and
ancient temples, coconut-palm-shaded beaches, game reserves with wild
elephants and leopards. The dining experience is incredible and exotic
shopping will allow you to take home one of a kind souvenirs. Be warned,
though the U.S. Department of State lifted its long-standing travel
warning on Sri Lanka in 2010, diplomats still advise not traveling to
the island’s far north. Any where else is fine.
14. Jackson Hole, Wyoming
One of America’s best kept secrets the Jackson Hole valley has been
tucked away between Grand Teton National Park and miles of national
forest in every other direction. Located in Wyoming, Jackson Hole
doesn’t sound like an ideal vacation but it’s isolation makes for a
perfect honeymoon. The seclusion provides a peaceful resolve from the
hectic wedding planning and and the rush of family and friends. Ski
resorts provide many activities if you want to get out. Jackson Hole has
caught the interest of actor Harrison Ford and former Vice President
Dick Cheney.
15. Sanibel Island
Another low-key American getaway is the Sanibel Island. Casual living is
the vibe of Sanibel Island. It is perfect for easy going couple that
just want to enjoy each others company. The island is home to nice chic
restaurants and shops. Its claim to fame is the seashells cover every
sandy surface. Looking for rare and colorful seashells has become a
favorite past time amongst visitors and locals. To save money don’t
drive to the beach find a nice water from hotel to save time. I advise
visiting in the fall.
