$12,000,000,000! The price of beauty, or the cost of vanity, increased
by 12% in 2013 to over $12,000,000,000, with more than 11 million
surgical and nonsurgical procedures according to American Society for
Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). The top cosmetic procedures are
liposuction, breast, augmentation, eyelid surgery, tummy tucks, and nose
surgery. The popularity of butt augmentations have increased those
procedures by 86% 2014, a statistic that wasn’t even included in 1997
ASAPS reports. But what is the ultimate cost of plastic surgery?
• Simone Jones, 45-year old grandmother and mother of four also died in
February of cardiac arrest, during cosmetic surgery. She had saved
$11,000 for a tummy tuck, buttocks lift, and liposuction on her arms,
legs and back. Doctors were 98% completed when she died during the
procedure.

• In December 2010, 35-year old Lidvian Zelaya of Florida never returned
home following a procedure to remove fat from her waist and add it to
her buttocks. The couple had saved $4,600 for the procedure. The cause
of death was the result of acute adipose tissue embolism due to
complications from the surgery.

• Olivia Goldsmith, 54-year old author of “The First Wives Club”, died
of cardiac arrest caused by complications from anesthesia during
preparation for elective facial surgery. This followed the death of
Susan Malitz, a 56-year-old Connecticut woman, who died at the same
facility while she was being prepared for cosmetic surgery.
• In February, 2013, April Jenkins of Georgia died while undergoing
liposuction. Later that year in June, Erica Beaubrun died during a
buttocks reduction being performed by the same doctor. It was reported
that the doctor anesthetized Jenkins with a propofol-soaked rag stuffed
into her mouth and pierced her liver during the procedure.

• A 22-year old mother, Tamara Blaine, died in July, 2013 from a
silicone injection administered at a hotel by 25-year old Tamira
Mobley. She was announced dead at St. Luke’s hospital after Mobley
delayed a call for help when Blaine had a bad reaction to the injection.

• In January, 2015, a 40-year old transgender woman, Katya De La Riva,
died after getting a silicon butt injection at a Santa Ana area silicon
party. She experienced respiratory issues after the injection; her cause
of death was listed as “silicone embolism syndrome”.
• Padge Windslowe, who goes by the name Black Madam, is facing murder
charges for 20-year old Claudia Aderotimi in 2011. Windslowe had no
license or training. Aderotimi died of a pulmonary embolism which,
officials say, was caused by Windslowe’s injection at a “Pumping Party”.
• The world lost an icon in September 2014 when comedy and Hollywood
legend Joan Rivers passed away. She stopped breathing and went into
cardiac arrest while she was having surgery on her throat.
