Russia, the hosts of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup have crashed out of the competition.
Russia could only muster 3 points in a group with Portugal, Mexico and New Zealand. The hosts of the 2018 World cup crashed out after a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Mexico.
They went in front earlier in the game when Alexandr Samedov put the ball into the back of the net before Mexico leveled via Nestor Araujo five minutes later.
Hirving Lozano then made it two for Mexico after a costly error from goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev in the second half. To make matters worse for Russia, Yuri Zhirkov was sent off 22 minutes to the end of the game. Mexico held on to their lead and claimed all the three points.
Mexico and group leaders Portugal will now advance to the next stage of the competition.
