The Nigerian senate on Tuesday voted to alter the 1999 constitution and
strip state governments of the responsibility of organizing local
government elections.
According to the senate, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, should conduct state government elections henceforth.
The proposal became the 33rd item of the report on the bill to amend the 1999 Constitution presented by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu on Tuesday.
Originally, the report had 32 items which included autonomy for local government areas.
But Senator Dino Melaye said allowing states to oversee conducts of local government elections make a mess of the call for autonomy. Instead, Mr. Melaye moved that the Independent National Electoral Commission should conduct the local elections.
He was supported by his colleagues.
The majority of Nigerian state governments hardly conduct local government elections. Most Nigerian local councils are overseen by appointed caretaker committees.
