Immigration police on Tuesday, August 8, arrested five Nigerians for living and working illegally in the country.
Lieutenant General Ouk Hiesela, director of investigations
at the Interior Ministry’s general department of immigration, said four
were arrested in Phnom Penh’s Chamkarmon district while another was
apprehended in Kandal province’s Takhmao town.
He said his officers found that four of them did not have
passports or travel documents to work or stay in Cambodia. The fifth had
a passport, but with a visa that expired five months ago.
“They all are being questioned by immigration police forces
at the department,” Lt Gen Hiesela said, adding they would be deported
as soon as they have the money to buy air tickets home.
On Monday, August 7, three other Nigerian men were arrested
in Phnom Penh for staying in the country illegally and are now being
detained at the department awaiting deportation.
General Heisela said his officials questioned the trio and
that two had no passports, while the third suspect did, but with an
expired visa.
The three were arrested in Tuol Tom Poung 2 commune.
“Only one had a visa, but had overstayed. We will deport
all three of them,” Maj Gen Heisela said, adding that police had already
informed their Nigerian counterparts of the arrests.
He said the trio will be deported as soon as they have the money to buy plane tickets themselves.
