The police in Abuja have arrested an Abuja-based taxi driver identified as Sikiru Lamidi, for allegedly killing a former Nigerian ambassador to South Africa, Ngam Nwachukwu and stealing his SUV and other valuables on November 24th 2016.

According to reports, on November 23rd,Nwachukwu boarded the cab operated by Lamidi in Abujaand while they were heading to his destination, the former ambassador informed Lamidi of his SUV that has some mechanical fault. Lamidi informed him that he had a brother who repairs such cars and Nwachukwu asked Lamidi to come to his house at Villa Nova Estate to pick up the faulty SUV the next day. When Lamiidi arrived the house, he met Nwachukwu who lives alone with his security guard who is also an electrician. The guard had gone out to do some jobs when Lamidi came.

The former Ambassador offered Lamidi food as he was already eating on his dinning table when he came in. While eating, the suspect attacked the deceased, stabbing him with a scissors on the neck. The suspect then removed the Plasma TV and home theater in the house and also ran away with the SUV which he sold to one Femi Adeyemi with forged documents at N1.480m.

When interrogated, Lamidi said he did not know what came over him.

“After stabbing the man, I felt terrible and guilty but there was nothing I could do to reverse the situation” he said.

After killing his victim, the suspect explained that he sold the TV and home theatre audio system to a seller of fairly-used products at Area 10, Abuja for N38,000. He revealed that he kept the SUV in Sauka Village along Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Road for two weeks before driving it to Oyo state where he spent N380,000 to forge the car documents.

“Out of the remaining N1.1m, I bought a motorcycle for N180,000 and invested N500,000 in a cooperative society. I gave a car dealer N500,000 to assist me in getting a car but he defrauded me and didn’t provide any vehicle”he said

When asked if he had committed similar crimes before, the suspect denied saying it was his first time.
“I have not committed any crime before; I blame the devil for this. Sometimes, I entertain negative or diabolical thoughts, but I don’t smoke or drink”.
